The Jura region is the home of the Montbeliarde breed and has the most densely populated area of the breed. EvaJura is at the forefront of the largest independent breeding statin for the breed in France, now genomic testing 1200 young bulls annually. The team of technicians and qualified classifieds have vast knowledge of the breed. Potential bull dams are selected and put forward to a panel of 5 breeders for inspection. Those who pass the criteria are plan mated and flushed to produce a potential male to test for a future sire. This is not just a computer process of stacking numbers. It is a thorough selection process looking at a balance of type and production.
Jura-Betail, a farmers-owned cooperative, supplies bovine genetic from the Montbeliarde breed in France and worldwide.
Established in 1948, the cooperative initiates in 1952 the progeny test selection within the Montbeliarde breed. Jura-Betail, who runs since a genetic improvement program and distribute 45 new bulls a year, has highly influenced the Montbeliarde breed evolution.
Jura-Betail, a well-known farm cooperative consists of:
- More than 1,300 breeders who entrust the coop to follow their heifers and cpws' insemination and to develop the selection program of the breed and the sales of livestock.
- A board of directors who consist of 21 breeders.
- 40 employees.
- A turnover of more than 8 million Euros.
- 300,000 straws are sold every year on all five continents.
- 80,000 AI done by the 20 AI technicians each year.

Genomic selection, but with the dam information:
The genomic system developed in France is one of the most reliable worldwide. And beside the important steps done in 2015, reliablity still stands around 70%.
To complete that information and make a more profitable research, Jura-Betail takes into account all information available on the dam of each sire. Thus, a technical commission (breeders and technicians) visit each dam within her herd before approving and confirming the selection of each bull that will enter the AI station.
